EPL: Wrong signing – Jamie Carragher slams Man United’s new player

Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher has labelled Manchester United’s signing of Lisandro Martinez a mistake.

He said the decision to bring the Uruguayan to Old Trafford has already proven to be a wrong one after the defender’s calamitous performance in Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Brentford.

Brentford had it so easy with Manchester United, as goals from Josh Dasilva, Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo gave the home side a well deserved victory over the Red Devils.

Martinez has struggled to deal with his opponents’ physicality in Manchester United’s two opening matches.

This was largely evident with Mee’s goal, as the Brentford defender easily towered over Martinez during a set-piece.

Before his arrival at Old Trafford, pundits have wondered whether a 5ft 9in, being this short, could play as a centre-back in the Premier League.

And now, after the Brentford defeat, Carragher looks ready to dub the 24-year-old a flop.

“…The signing of Martinez for over £50m already looks wrong,” the former Liverpool man tweeted.

Before the season was underway, Carragher had raised concerns over Martinez’s height.

“[5ft 9in] that’s small,” he told Sky Sports.

“That’s small for any player on the pitch in some ways now, really…”
