Nine victims of the mining pit collapse in Galadima-Kogo, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State have been laid to rest.

The six Muslim victims were buried at the Unguwan Daji Muslim cemetery following funeral prayers at the palace of the Emir of Minna on Wednesday evening, while the three Christian victims were interred at Christian cemeteries in Minna, the state capital.

Suleiman Isah, an elder brother to one of the victims, who said he could not attend due to ill health, described the event as a grievous moment for the families involved.

Akilu Ishaku Kuta, the chairman of Shiroro Local Government Area, called on the state and the federal governments to ensure that all mining companies operating in the local government obtained the necessary permits and implement precautionary measures to prevent future tragedies.

The chairman also noted that some victims remained trapped in the pit.

DAILY POST had reported that a mining site managed by African Minerals and Logistics Limited collapsed in early June, and trapped many of the company’s workers.
