The All Progressives Congress, APC, screening committee for Rivers State has reportedly approved 32 aspirants for the House of Assembly, who are believed to be loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The screening, which occurred at the party’s state secretariat located along Aba Expressway in Port Harcourt on Saturday, was marked by a significant police presence.
On Friday, social media discussions suggested that Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), planned to “utilize the police to intimidate and harass aspirants loyal to Fubara from engaging in the process.”
However, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), who oversaw the police officers on Saturday, stated that their deployment was intended to maintain security at the venue, rather than to intimidate or harass the aspirants.
Following the screening, 32 allies of Fubara, including Chijioke Ihunwo (the former Obio/Akpor council Chairman) and Victor Oko Jumbo (currently representing Bonny in the State Assembly), were reportedly authorized to participate in the process.
Other aspirants, who are said to be loyal to Wike—including some of the 27 Assembly members who switched to the APC from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, were also reportedly screened.
Analysts indicate that the conditions are now ripe for a confrontation between the factions of Fubara and Wike during the primaries.
Additionally, on Saturday, Dax Alabo George and Kingsley Chinda, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives and both known allies of Wike, were screened alongside Tonye Cole for the governorship primary.
The 32 Fubara allies screened for the State House of Assembly primaries include Ihunwo Obio/Akpor I; Oko Jumbo, Bonny; Sokari Goodboy Sokari, Ahoada West; Orubienimigha Adolphus Timothy, Opobo/Nkoro; Tonye Briggs Oniyide, Akuku-Toru I; Samuel Reginald Sokari, Akuku-Toru II; Chime Egwuma Ezebalike, Ahoada East II; Emejim Wisdom Chiemele, Ahoada East I; Vincent Reuben Obu, Abua/Odual; Amua Isioma Henry, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni I; Nnwoziri Chukwuemeka Bishop Best, Ikwerre; and Fugbara Goodluck Ohaka, Emohua; Kpeden Kenneth, Gokana; Bobby Frank Abayomi; Port Harcourt I; Weche Ndubuisi Raymond, Port Harcourt III; Onyema Loveday Hechiaru, Omuma; and Berebupakabo Isaac Sekibo, Ogu/Bolo.
