Senator Philip Aruwa Gyunka, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State, reportedly escaped an attack by suspected political thugs while travelling to participate in the recently concluded Nasarawa North Senatorial District bye-election.
The allegation was made by a media aide to Governor Abdullahi Sule, Ango Ngharni, in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to him, the incident occurred on Saturday, June 20, as the former senator was travelling to his hometown of Gbuje to take part in the by-election.
Nggarmi alleged that the attackers, armed with machetes and axes, intercepted Gyunka’s convoy and attempted to assault him.
The governor’s aide, however, stated that the APC stalwart escaped unharmed, although his vehicle was reportedly damaged during the attack.
Ngharni condemned the incident and called for a thorough investigation to identify and bring those responsible to justice.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement regarding the alleged attack, while the identities and motives of the assailants remain unknown.
