Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday as Newcastle United secured a 2-0 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scored in the second half to hand Newcastle their first league win of the campaign and leave Spurs without a goal or point from their opening two matches.
Elanga gives Newcastle the breakthrough
Tottenham enjoyed the better of the opening period but could not turn their possession into a goal.
Newcastle goalkeeper Lucas Hornicek was forced into saves to deny Mathys Tel and Jan Paul van Hecke as the hosts looked for an early breakthrough.
Newcastle gradually became more dangerous after the interval, with Elanga producing the decisive moment midway through the second half. The winger controlled the ball inside the penalty area before turning and sending his shot into the net via the post.
Elanga has made an encouraging start to the campaign after scoring against Liverpool last weekend, following a difficult season in which he struggled for regular impact.
Wissa adds second goal
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi responded to the setback by making three substitutions, but his team struggled to create a clear opportunity to level the match.
Newcastle took advantage of Spurs’ inability to find an equaliser when Wissa doubled their lead.
Substitute Nick Woltemade headed a corner towards the six-yard box, allowing Wissa to produce an improvised finish with his back to goal. The forward hooked the ball over his head and into the net to put Newcastle firmly in control.
Spurs face early questions
The defeat leaves Tottenham with consecutive losses at the beginning of De Zerbi’s first Premier League season in charge. Spurs have also failed to score in either match, having lost 3-0 away to Brentford on the opening weekend.
That poor start comes despite the club spending around £320 million on eight new players during the summer transfer window.
Omar Marmoush made his Tottenham debut against Newcastle, while £75 million signing Savio was unavailable because of muscle fatigue.
Newcastle, meanwhile, claimed a much-needed victory after drawing their opening league game. Tonali, who joined Tottenham from Newcastle for £100 million, was also jeered by the visiting supporters during his return to St James’ Park.
The result increases the pressure on De Zerbi to quickly find a solution to Tottenham’s attacking problems.
