Joao Pedro delivered when Chelsea’s season demanded clarity, scoring a clinical hat-trick to power a comeback victory over Aston Villa and reignite the club’s Champions League ambitions.
The Brazilian forward struck three times after Douglas Luiz had handed Villa an early lead, with Cole Palmer also on target, as Chelsea secured a statement win at Villa Park to tighten the race for a top-four finish.
Pedro leaves a mark
Villa made the sharper start. Leon Bailey’s low cross found Douglas Luiz, who flicked home inside two minutes to register his first goal in more than two years and stun the visitors.
Chelsea, however, refused to fold. Emi Martinez denied both Pedro and Palmer in quick succession, while Reece James saw a penalty appeal waved away following a challenge from Ian Maatsen.
The pressure paid off when Malo Gusto’s cut-back found Pedro unmarked to tap home the equaliser.
Villa thought they had reclaimed control when Ollie Watkins finished off a quick break sparked by James’ misplaced pass, but VAR ruled the striker narrowly offside. That decision proved crucial.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Enzo Fernandez threaded a precise pass into Pedro’s path. The forward lifted the ball over Martinez and, after another tight VAR check, was deemed onside to give Chelsea the lead.
Clinical finish seals statement win
Chelsea maintained control after the restart. Palmer extended the advantage 10 minutes into the second half, capitalising on sustained pressure.
Pedro then completed his treble from Alejandro Garnacho’s assist, taking his season tally to 17 goals and underlining his growing influence in the run-in.
The defeat leaves Villa just three points above Chelsea, having missed the chance to stretch the gap to nine. For the visitors, the result moves them up to fifth and within touching distance of their rivals.
