Reports circulating online claim that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has been named the country’s new leader following strikes by the United States and Israel that killed his father.
According to the claims, Iran’s Assembly of Experts, an 88-member body of senior clerics responsible for selecting the Supreme Leader, chose Mojtaba as the successor.
The Assembly has only appointed a new supreme leader once since the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979, when Ali Khamenei was selected after the death of Ruhollah Khomeini.
About Mojtaba Khamenei
Mojtaba Khamenei, born on September 8, 1969, in Mashhad, is the second of Ali Khamenei’s six children. He studied at the Alavi School in Tehran before later moving to the religious city of Qom to continue his Islamic studies.
Unlike his father, Mojtaba has largely maintained a low public profile. He has never held a formal government position and rarely appears in public, although reports over the years have suggested he may wield influence behind the scenes within Iran’s political and religious establishment.
