Nollywood actor Abiodun Ayoyinka has opened up about the challenges he has faced since becoming widely known for portraying the iconic character Papa Ajasco.
Ayoyinka shared his experience during an interview with media personality Lucky Udu, where he explained that the character which brought him fame has also limited many opportunities for him in the entertainment industry.
Speaking about the issue, he said, “The major problem why people are not seeing me where they are supposed to see me is cause that particular character (Papa Ajasco) has been registered by Wale Adenuga and anybody that wants to use me outside with the character has never been easy on me.”
Actor Says He Cannot Use the Character Freely
According to the actor, he does not have the legal rights to use the name or appearance of the character without authorization.
He added, “I don’t have the right to use the name Papa Ajasco unless I go and take permission. I can’t even use the costume and cause of this I have had limited opportunities because people would want to use me as Papa Ajasco and not Yinka.”
Ayoyinka Reflects on Personal Struggles
Reflecting on his personal situation, Ayoyinka admitted that life has not been easy despite the recognition that came with the role.
He said, “Things have never been okay for years back now, I don’t even have a car of my own or even a house.”
Struggle to Build Identity Beyond the Character
Although the character made him popular among fans of the classic Nigerian comedy series Papa Ajasco & Company, Ayoyinka noted that separating his personal identity from the role has been difficult.
He explained that many producers and promoters still prefer to see him only as Papa Ajasco rather than as an actor capable of playing other roles, a situation he says has limited his growth and opportunities in the industry.
